We made it!

So we made it to the Fringe. All safe and sound. And now with nearly two weeks past we thought we’d take some time out and update you a little!

What an emotional rollercoaster it’s been. As everyone will tell you it’s nonstop – flyering, worrying, networking, performing, worrying and learning.

As I sit in our flat overlooking the Scottish Highlands it’s a good time to contemplate and reflect on the last week. It’s been all sorts of emotions, some good some bad. The days roll into weeks here. In one way I feel I’ve been here a year and in others merely a day. I have learnt a hell of a lot already, about myself as a performer and a theatre maker. Things keep developing in the show- we’re always trying to improve on things- as well as trying to cut it down a little! It has been tough but brilliant doing a one woman show and I whole-heartedly wouldn’t want it any other way for 2011. It has stopped raining on the odd occasion and walking is the name of the game up here, which is lovely. Most people are very kind and allow us to have a minute from their busy schedules to talk to them about our show and shelter them under our ‘WATERPROOF umbrellas’.

The show has been getting some lovely, positive responses, which is brilliant. We’ve had a lot of press in and with some great comments; 4 Stars from Hairline Magazine and two very warm 3 Star reviews from The Scotsman and Fest Mag. We are really happy with these reactions as a new company, with its first show at the Fringe, and hope more good news will come our way soon!

We’ve also been able to see some incredibly thought out and heartfelt pieces of theatre, inspiring us as individuals and as a company. Shows that open our minds to the possibilities available to us in theatre, and how much having a large budget can aid a piece. We have become increasingly aware of the need for a decent budget to help our development as theatre makers and actor/writer’s. We have BIG plans to continue the name of How It Ended, a company ‘to look out for’ PUBLIC REVIEWS. Big ambitions, but to do so we will have to work hard to establish industry relationships and continue our fundraising efforts! And we are up for it, definitely so.

In the meantime Edinburgh is a lovely place and we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in August!

Welcoming in a very busy few weeks!

A big week ahead before all the madness of the Fringe begins!

What a week of fundraising!

This week has been nonstop. As always :)

With the help of family and friends we were able to collect enough stuff, junk and unloved, unwanted bits to have yet another car boot sale.

This time we did not plan for rain. BIG mistake.

Waking at 4.30, loading a car full to the brim (and when I say brim- I mean I couldn't see out of the back window and Teresa had to balance boxes and chairs on her head and lap!) and THEN driving to discover the car boot cancelled for this weekend due to 'BAD weather reports...Sorry' is not the best start!

However, we were not going to give up that easily. So we got on the phone and found as many local (ish) car boot sales and... all were closed... but one - an indoor one 2 hours away.

We were off like a shot before we could give it too much thought and decide to go back to our nice warm beds. Of course when we arrived they said it won't start until 8am and actually there was no room at the inn. You can imagine what we were thinking....

But no we didn't give up, instead we asked to set up outside. And that was the moment where everything changed - We set up and there was no stopping us!

Others followed, but alas didn't follow our sale expertise. And from junk we managed to raise some good dosh before the heavens opened and we just had to give up. Plus it was time to go to rehearsals for Roll Credits at Grove End Road!

And what a great night it was! The Hat Factory gave us a lovely space downstairs, we decorated it 50's styley, put music on, opened the bar and we were ready. Thanks to Mummy Burns we had a great crowd in and they were loving it due to the very talented Michael Begley. You were brill!

A special thank you must go to Ronnie Dorsey and Scamp Productions for their very generous donations on the night. Both will be up at the Edinburgh fringe with 'Of Sound Mind', 'Stick Man', 'Private Peaceful' and even more! Do check them out. We love them.

Drum Roll Please....

After the shots we made some tweaks to our set and props to then say goodbye to our, what feels like children, today to let them fly the nest up to Scotland ready for our arrival on the 1st August. All thanks to the lovely people at Cadogan Tate and of course Daddy Burns for the epic journey to Wimbledon and back! I do look pretty happy/tired in this picture BUT I am not... Sad goodbyes all round.

But the festival is near approaching and tickets are selling fast so please, if you know you're coming then do book before you come!

With our set absent we are really excited to continue our rehearsals, keep you all up to date with news and prepare for the month ahead!

To get our juices going before Edinburgh we're doing a little preview of Waterproof at the Riverside Studios next Sunday (24th). It's gonna be a cool stripped down version. So it's a total one off.

60's Murder Mystery Night

Wow, my friends are brilliant.

So let me fill you all in... Last Saturday I hosted a 60's themed Champagne Murder Mystery evening for some of my closest girlfriends. They wanted to show their support to Waterproof and it's journey up to the 'Burgh this August and they certainly did that.

They all really got into the spirit of the night - costumes, fake man chests, wigs - the works!

Don't they all look great!

                                       

I greeted them with music, alcohol, food... and as you can see even my Mum was lovin' it!

                             The evening went off with a bang and the game continued til late!

I want to thank all of you who came, because without you it would have been rubbish!

What's more we were able to get a 1/8 page advertisement in Fest Magazine - a free, and very popular mag. around Edinburgh, before and during the Festival.

Good News!

So, we have been so busy that we have not had a minute even to share some of our good news...

Driving to Disneyland

He turns to me with a mischievous look in his eyes

My Dad says

It was neck-a-neck all the way

The moon was relentless

A stubborn competitor

Harbouring secret desires to get to know Pluto better

All so familiar to I and he

Not sunny Florida or Gay-Paris!

‘I suppose we’d have to invite Mum and Damien, if we went without them they’d be sad’

As we pulled into the driveway

‘That’s exactly what I thought’ said Dad

He lifts me out off the front seat

My feet

Too little to climb down

We give up the fight

The moon’s smug glare burns our faces now

‘The moon won Dad. We lost’

And we look up at the sky

‘No, Darlin’ in life we never lose

We just run out of time’

He slams the big rusty door

And in his arms I fly

And we never did make it to Disneyland

That sawdust

TaleBlazers - An Evening of Short Plays from Emerging Playwrights

Hello,


An evening of 10 minute plays at the Hen and Chickens Theatre on June 12th, showcasing the most exciting short plays from emerging playwrights.

The event will be the first of many they hope to produce over 2011 and into future seasons.


How It Ended are representing!


Teresa submitted 'Roll Credits' and it was accepted. I auditioned alongside Neil Chinneck and we were cast. So with Tom Brandt directing we are one of the productions on Sunday night.


After about 11 hours of rehearsals we'll be showing this masterpiece on Sunday.

Our Comedy Night Gossip

I thought I would update you on how Sunday's event went.


So Teresa and I had been to our first meeting with TaleBlazers earlier that day. It was regarding an event of short plays from emerging playwrights, which we are a part of. We then ran to meet Madeleine at The Dog House, Kennington, who had been preparing things for our arrival.

Madeleine had done a brilliant job organising the space, so all we needed to do was add the banner and sweets! 


With the help of Jennifer Longden we were all ready to go. The artists arrived as did our lovely audience, and we were off! 


Waving goodbye to that dreaded Sunday night feeling and enjoying a night of merriment with How It Ended Productions and friends.

Car Boot No.2

Bleedin' heck.

These early starts (4:30am!) are rough but definitely WORTH IT.

This morning was our second car boot sale -held to raise money to get us How It Enders to Edinburgh Fringe this summer.    

 

All in all we made £120 - which ain't too shabby for the junk we've accumulated over the years.  

Eva Sampson is a world champion haggler.

WATERPROOF on location...

 The other night - armed with fairy lights, a few props and a camera, Eva and I 'Waterproof'-ed up a dilapidated building in Luton.  Amidst the brick and the lamplight we attempted to create some cool production shots that capture WATERPROOF's atmosphere.

So here are just a few of shots taken that night.

 We're also excited to announce that we will be working with Mobius PR to promote the show this summer. We're chuffed because Mobius have worked with some great companies over the past few years such as Gecko, Analogue and Hoipolloi. 

It really is an exciting (and busy!) time. We can't believe the Edinburgh Fringe brochure is released in two weeks. TWO WEEKS.

Sharing Saturday...

As another week fades away quickly things are becoming increasingly clear for How It Ended Productions.

We are now a month away from the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe brochure being released and tickets going on sale - we can't wait to check out all the other shows - it's certain to be another exceptional year for theatre and we going to ensure that we're at the centre of the hub.

This week has seen some very exciting creative developments. Inspired by our event on Saturday and checking out some brilliant productions in London we took the opportunity to work through script augmentation, set and visual ideas, as well as our aspirations for W A T E R P R O O F and the company for the year ahead.

Teresa and Eva met to discuss the show in depth and with the benefit of hindsight we were able to scrutinise what really works, what lines don't quite fit right and some brutal cuts for the 60 minute time restrictions on the Fringe. It has seen some characters emerge larger and brighter, whilst others disappear into the shadows so to tighten and focus the piece. 

After much debating, role playing and list making Teresa locked herself away in her attic room (soon she'll be able to be the office instead) and wrote. We are in a great position to make 

W A T E R P R O O F the best show we can and we are not going to stop until we believe we've got there.

'But I Made You a Mixed Tape' was a pleasure and after a great response How It Ended Productions are now looking to make this a regularly produced event. A platform for emerging writers, performers and musicians. More information for plans next month will be on our blog soon so keep a look out.
